The Toy Machine
by Braeden Johnson

Late in the night, while I was sleeping in my bed, a mysterious noise came from outside the downstairs door. I quickly put on my clothes, jumped out of bed and raced down the stairs. I slowly opened the door. To my surprise, Rudolf was there and he needed my help!

"Santa's toy-making machine is being attacked by toy soldiers!" he said. "Can you help me?" he asked.

"Sure, I would love to help!" I said.

"Jump on my back," said Rudolf.

"O.K.," I replied. I hopped on his back and we flew off to Toyland. I took a wrench and entered the toy factory. There were about 50 toy soldiers attacking Santa's toy machine. I scared them off and fixed the toy machine.

Santa was so happy that he thanked me and gave me Rudolf's collar and bells as a reward. I will never forget that exciting Christmas Eve!

Grandpa Joe
by Brent

Once a boy named Matt was told that he had to go and live at his Grandpa's house. Matt is 11 years old and lives in Victoria. Matt took along his book. When he got to his Grandpa's house in Vancouver, he walked in.

Grandpa Joe jumped out and said, "Today's different!" Joe told Matt that they were going to have lots of fun!

First they went fishing. Matt caught 5 fish and Joe caught 4 fish. After that, they went on a special walk. It was chipped and looked like two people holding hands.

Joe said, "Matthew, when I die, use this rock to help remember me. Keep it safe please."

With this, Matt and Grandpa walked home and Matt's parents picked him up. Matt said he had the best day of his life!

Family Sports Night

by Brandon K.

It was a cool frosty night and my cousins and uncle were coming over to play street hockey with me and my dad.  It was almost 5 p.m. and getting dark out, and my dad was helping me get my pads on me.  Right when my dad was just doing up the last buckle, I saw a flash of light.

Once I saw the light, I sprung up, and raced out the door.  Luckily my dad snapped the buckle together just as I ran out the door.  As I zoomed to the driveway, I snatched my hockey net.  I saw my uncle’s car pull up to the side of the road. My cousins jumped out of the car, and grabbed their sticks from the trunk and ran up the driveway.  I rolled the ball to them and they knocked it back at me.

“Brandon,” said Graham, “could I be goalie today?”

“I think my pad are too small for you,” I told him.

But Graham appeared to be mad.  “Well, Brandon, we came over to play, and we are the guests here!”

I pushed up my helmet.  “No, Graham,” I exclaimed.  “That’s not the point!  Unless you play without pads, you’ll have to bring yours next time!”

Soon my dad and uncle came in.  Uncle Gordon turned to me and his boys.  “Listen… everyone needs to cooperate.”

“I guess I’ll be goalie next time with my pads.  Play resume!”  I said as I flipped down my helmet.

After hours of play we went in.  “Does anyone want hot chocolate?” asked Mom.  “No way!” everyone exclaimed.

“Could we have pop instead?” I asked.

“Sure!” said Mom.  No one had noticed the time until I looked at my watch.  It was 8 p.m. already!

“Hey, it’s 8 p.m. already!” I said.

“We have to go now,” said Uncle Gordon.  They went to the front and got their coats on.

“Hopefully we can come again,” said Brian.

“That would be great!” said Dad.

And then they left.

My Siblings

by Brianna Kuefler

My siblings can be annoying,
My siblings can be brats.
My siblings can turn my life all upside down and ruin all my hats!

But sometimes they can be generous,
And sometimes they’re not mean.
And sometimes when I’m not looking, they’ll plan a party just for me!

Plant Loving Grandma

By Brandon K.

“Aw,” said his Grandma.  “It’s summer again, Brandon.  My favorite time of the year.”

“Ya, ya… whatever.”  Brandon babbled under his breath.

Summer is Brandon’s favorite time of the year too, like his Grandma, but whenever he comes to his Grandma’s they’d plant flowers.  If Brandon gave the plant to much water, he’d have to pick out the dandelions from the lawn.  That wasn’t easy.

“So, Brandon,” asked his Grandma, “How about a little planting?”

“Um, well there’s this show on T.V. and…”  Brandon told his Grandma.

“Tut, tut, planting’s first!” exclaimed his Grandma.

“Ohhhh,” Brandon sighed.

So they set off to do the planting.  One by one, planting the flowers.  And watering them.  Brandon was starting to get tired of planting when he had an idea.  So he got his water bucket and set off to the garden hose to fill up his bucket. When he got there he turned the tap and, like I said, filled up the bucket with water.  So he went back to the garden.  When he got there, he flooded the plants with water when he Grandma wasn’t looking.

Right away his Grandma turned around and saw what Brandon did.  She marched Brandon into the house and sent him to the most boring room in the house.  After 30 minutes, Brandon was starting to think he would never come out of this boring room.  He looked around and thought, “Wow, four walls, no toys, no T.V., and worse yet, no Nintendo!!”

“Ding, dong!!”

“What a relief, saved by the bell!”

“Brandon,” said his Grandma, “You can’t do things like that because you hurt my plants, and you hurt me, because I spent so much time planting them, so don’t do that again, O.K.?”

“O.K.” said Brandon.  Then Brandon’s mom drove him home.

Almost Under the Ice

by B. Jabusch

The ice was thick on the lake that Easter Sunday. It was light-jacket weather. My mom, sister, and I were driving to Sylvan Lake. My godparents have a cabin by the water. Today was also my mom’s birthday, and she was going to see her new godchild, Kyle, for the first time. Kyle has two older sisters- Sara and Lauren.

Just after supper, my sister, Carmen, was whispering something to Sarah, Kyle’s biggest sister about doing something again. I was trying to get it out of her, but she said I could follow her when we got outside. So we walked through the bushes, down to the lake, down to the ice. Carmen and found a spot where we could walk down onto the lake. I was a little cautious at first, but soon I was running and sliding across the ice. Carmen and I decided to investigate a big river- a crack in the ice had made a four-feet-wide river. We found a piece of ice floating in the water, and it was shaped somewhat like a dog bone. I felt it- it was smooth.

“Sarah! Lauren! Come and feel this ice chunk… Aaaah!” We called them over, but then I screamed. The ice gave way and slipped out from under me. The water was like twenty degrees below zero!! My legs went numb, but I managed to get out of the ‘river’ with a little help from Carmen. I ran back to the cabin as fast as I could. I was thinking that my pants would freeze to my legs. It seemed to take a long time to get back to the cabin, even though I was taking the shortcut. When I saw the cabin, I could hardly walk- my legs felt heavy and were still numb. I was encouraging myself to finish my ‘obstacle’. When I got inside, I took a hot shower and put on some of Sarah’s clothes.

Now I look back to that close call, and think- what if the river was farther out? How deep could the water have been? Would I have been pulled under the ice if there had been a strong current? What if I’d had leeches on my legs? My pants could have frozen onto me! I ma very thankful that I am still alive!! Oh, Sylvan Lake, what could happen next? First, one of your ducks leaves a present on my knee while I am jet skiing with my dad, then I go for a little swim when it’s minus five outside!!
