Going to the Park
by Kara Paul

Today my mom and I were going to go to the park, but then my baby sister got sick, and my mom had to stay home with her. I was angry that my mom and I could not go to the park, even though she said we could go another day.

That night my sister would not stop crying. I felt sorry for her, but I also felt sorry for me. It took me a long time to fall asleep that night.

When I woke up the next morning, I went downstairs and saw my mom sitting on a chair drinking a cup of coffee. My little sister was sitting on her lap with a smile spread across her face. My mom got me breakfast and told me that we could go to the park today. I ate my breakfast and was dressed within a half hour and we were on our way to the park.

When we got there I took out my kite and started flying it. Later, my mom took me and my sister on a walk. When we got back, we had a picnic. Then we packed up all our stuff and went home. My mom said we would go back to the park again.

I went to my little sister's room and told her a story about how we would go back to the park again.

Karly
by Kate

When I heard that Karly had cancer I didn’t want to believe it. Karly was the only one I had left!

It all started when I was 20 years old, my mother was diagnosed with cancer and a year later she died from the cancer in her sleep. Two years after my mother’s death I go married to a man named Jack Rox. After a year of marriage we had a little girl and named her Karly. On Karly’s 5th birthday Jack died of cancer at 31 years old.

Now Karly, only 10 and diagnosed with liver cancer. Why is cancer killing my family? This all started within Karly was complaining about an upset stomach. I gave her some medicine and sent her off to bed. The next morning her stomach still was hurting so I took her to the doctor. When the doctor told me that Karly had liver cancer I stopped breathing, my heart stopped beating. I couldn’t believe my ears. Karly couldn’t move or speak either, she knew what cancer had done to her family

For weeks I had to take her to the hospital for chemotherapy. On Saturday, the 15th, Karly went in for her operation.

After an hour the nurse came out and said calmly, "the operation went well, but she is weak. Would you like to see her?"

I nodded and followed the nurse into Karly’s recover room. As I walked into the room, Karly opened her eyes slightly and whispered in a squeaky, soft voice, "Mommy is that you?"

I nodded and whispered, "Shh!" then put her hand in mine, "You need to get some rest".

Karly closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep. For a week after the operation, I took Karly to the hospital for chemotherapy to make sure that all the bad blood cells were out of her liver.

Now Karly is cancer free, but I still remember the shocking day at the doctor’s office and that Saturday of Karly’s operation.

Zoo Girl
by Katie Sokil

"Jen, clean your room NOW!" yelled mom. "It’s turning into a zoo!" In a huff Jen did as she was told.

"Mom might be right, it is kind of a mess," Jen thought as she stomped up the stairs. When she opened her bedroom door, a little monkey hopped out. "Monkey! Monkey! Monkey!" she shrieked. The monkey jumped on her back and covered her mouth.

"Ooka, ooka!" called the monkey. Two more monkeys hopped out of Jen’s room. They led Jen into her room.

Inside her room, there were vines and leaves. Trees touched the ceiling and parrots were perched there. A lion roared in the distance. Turtles sat on the carpet, and an elephant trumpeted. Around her bed were vines, leaves and a snake. "Help Mom! My room it’s a jungle!!" Jen screamed.

"Jennifer Dolores McCarthy, I am speaking to you!" Mrs. McCarthy said. "Why are you screaming? Its is five o’clock a.m.! Go back to bed and tomorrow you are going to clean your room, why it’s a jungle in here!

Friends
by Kayla Duchene

One morning, some friendly people moved to an acreage just out of town. Their names were Bill and Sally. They had just gotten married a few weeks before they moved. Their house was in the mountains with the nearest house 2 miles away from the closest town.

That afternoon a huge black cloud started to cover the sky. The clouds kept growing until the sky was pitch black. Bill and Sally were scared out of their wits. When they looked out the window, they saw flocks of geese trying to push through the thick black cloud. Bill and Sally didn't know when there would be light again.

There was a little noise at the door that startled Bill and Sally. The sound got louder and louder, then all of a sudden, it stopped. Then there was a pounding knock at the door.

Bill tiptoed quietly to the door trying to miss all the creaks in the floor. He slowly turned the doorknob and opened the door. There was no one there. Bill looked down and up and then saw something falling from the sky. It landed right in front of Bill. The fallen object was a mini treasure chest. Bill opened it and at the exact same time, a hairy creature came running out from the mountains.

He said, "Your wish is my command!" Bill didn't know what to say.

He asked, "Can I have a dog to play with?

The hairy man said, "Give this man a magic dog."

The little treasure box opened and a ring started shooting waves of green magic. The magic shot up really high and then a brown cocker spaniel landed right in front of Bill. The puppy was jumping up and licking Bill's face. The hairy looking genie told Bill that he had two wishes left. Bill asked the genie what he would want.

The genie replied sniffling, "All I ever wanted was a friend."

When the treasure box opened, nothing happened.

My Secret Grandmas

by Kylee Darwish

One freezing cold December morning, I was just about to go to my Grandma L.V.’s house.  I was going to introduce my Grandma Helen to my Grandma L.V.  I was surprised when I was just about to introduce them, and my Grandma Helen said, “Hello L.V.”

“Hello Helen,” my Grandma L.V. said.

I thought that was very peculiar.  I decided to snoop around the house to see what I could find.  I found a badge that said Secret Agent and I could not help but overhear their conversation.  They were whispering about a mission, and Grandma L.V. whispered back that they should, “tell Kylee about being a Secret Agent.”

My grandmas were coming closer.  I ran to the T.V. and started to turn it on.

Then Grandma L.V. began to tell me, “It is hard to understand, but Helen and I are secret agents.”

I yelled, “Wow!  You’re secret agents.”

“SHHH!!  Keep quiet.  Don’t tell anybody.”

“Okay,” I said in a whisper.

It is amazing what you find out about your ordinary grandmas.

Jennie and the Ice
by Kiana Lee

One day when Jennie was about five she moved from the city to the country. She was happy but also very sad. Jennie was happy because she could ride horses all day. She was sad because she would leave all her friends. When the family got to the farm, her mom and dad showed Jennie around. She liked it, especially the horses! Her mom and dad said not to go by the bull, ice and the mean dog down the lane.

A cold winter day Jennie went out to play in the snow, when she saw the ice, she thought it would be fun to go on it. She went over and walked on the thin ice. Oh no!

“Mom! Mom! I fell through the ice!” Her mom heard her call and saw she needed help. She ran into the house and came out with a rope. With all her might she ran to the ice, lay down and gave Jennie the rope so she could pull her out. Her dad was ready with the blankets, which warmed Jennie up.

Next winter Mom and Dad said not to go by the ice and Jennie was so scared from last year that she didn’t. Jennie just played in the snow.
