Sonya's Baby
by Laura Saretsky

Sonya was excited and nervous at the same time. Her mother was going to have a baby. She was glad to help out with the chores around the house. Sonya was afraid of something, though. She was afraid that her parents would love the baby more than her.

When the baby was born, the whole family went to look at her and take her home. When they got to the hospital, Sonya was positive that her parents would love the baby even more. The baby was plump with a button nose and cute little hands. She also had blond curls and rosy cheeks. Everyone was talking about how cute the baby was and no one was paying attention to Sonya.

When everyone got home, Sonya ran upstairs to think. She pulled out her diary and wrote:
"Today has been pretty bad. First we went to the hospital to see the baby and she was cute. Second, everyone was ignoring me."

Sonya sat on her bed and thought. She thought about how baby Amy and how cute she was. She thought about what to do about her feelings about her. After a while, she decided to tell her parents. This was very hard for Sonya. When she tried, she couldn't tell them about how she felt.

Then one day, her mother saw that Sonya looked down-in-the-dumps.
"What's wrong, Sonya?" she asked. Then all of a sudden, Sonya poured it all out.

"I was really excited when I heard about the baby, then when we went to pick her up, she looked so cute and no one paid attention to me. It made me think that you'll love Amy more."

Her father leaned over close and said, "Tomorrow we'll take you out to dinner without Amy and we'll go to Fairytale Dream Restaurant." This new restaurant looked like a castle and had rides.

The next day Sonya dressed in her best clothes. Her mom and dad had got Grandma to baby-sit Amy. When they had given Grandma the doctor's phone number and the place where they were going to be, they got into the car and drove to the restaurant. When they got there, they had to wait in along line. When it was their turn, they were escorted to a table by "Little Red Riding Hood." Sonya ordered her favorite meal: ham and French fries with a coke to drink. It was delicious. During the evening, she realized just how much her parents loved her.

Grandma's Homemade Cake Recipe
by Lesley Thomas

Carly and her parents lived with her Grandma Victoria in a house by the lake. One day while her parents were away at a party, Grandma Victoria took out a special recipe for a cake.

She took out all of the ingredients that she needed, then asked, "Carly, make a cake with me." So we put the eggs, milk, flour and other ingredients and mixed it up. Then we put it in the cake pan and put it in the oven to bake.

While the cake was baking, Grandma told me all about the recipe. "This recipe is very special, because I created it," she said. Carly heard the car drive up and ran to the door with the recipe in her hand. She was telling her parents about it being an original recipe, when she accidentally dropped it. She looked frantically for the paper because this was the only copy of the recipe! Then she noticed that a magpie had taken it up to its nest. Everyone tried to think of a way to get the recipe down, but night came.

The next day, Carly went back out to try and get the recipe, but the magpie had already brought the recipe back to the back door. Carly yelled, "Grandma, Grandma, I found the recipe!"

From that time on, Carly, her parents, and her Grandma, lived happily every after.

Candy Land
by Lauren Gillis

All the kids in Timber Town wanted to visit Candy Land. Kids said that it would be like a dream come true. Adults said it was the black lagoon kingdom. Me, Lauren Gillis, I think it's neither. I think you have to go in to find out. Then it happened.

Whoever won the science fair at school got to go live in Candy Land in Sweet Estates. Those houses are machines. Huge! I knew it had to be a special project for this science fair. I decided to make my own homemade sugar candy. To make this sugar candy, I used brown sugar, white sugar, sprinkles, food coloring, icing sugar and, of course, food flavoring. I wanted to make tutti frutti flavor and tried to find a flavor. I couldn't find one, so I decided to get a bunch of fruit flavorings and went home. I went straight to work and grabbed the berry flavoring, the citron bottle and the surprise mix. I mixed all the ingredients together and the syrup mixture tasted wonderful. I just had to win!

I mixed the remaining ingredients with the tutti frutti syrup and put them into the freezer. The next day, the mixture had turned into little sugary candies that had an extraordinary taste. I put them in my science project display and waited. There were volcanoes, rockets, but I knew in my heart that the blue ribbon project was mine. When the voting started, I was so nervous. The crowd got quiet and then they announced the winner, "Lauren Gillis." I had won!

I skipped home happily and told my family to pack our bags to go to Candy Land. Tune in this December to find out what happens to Lauren and her family.

All About My Great Grandmother
by Lauren Dietze

First thing, her name is Nanny Seacat and she is the only Great Grandmother I know. She passed away at the age of 83 on September 5th, 1995. She was born on July 9th, 1912. I was very, very close to my Great Grandmother, Nanny Seacat.

At Yonkinpin (that was her home), I would help shave carrots and peel green beans. We went to Yonkinpin almost every day. On September 4th we went to visit her about 8:00 p.m. That morning we got a call from the hospital and they told us that she passed away about 3:00 a.m.

She was a very special lady.
