Grandpa's Spooky Stories
by Mark Abbott
John is a grandfather, just like me. He always tells
spooky stories to his grandkids and they get freaked. They think that
there are monsters under their bed. It was getting annoying to the
parents. They wanted it to stop soon. They decided they would threaten
him. They threatened that they would hurt him. But he said, "Yah,
right," because he knew they wouldn't hurt him.
So they thought of a different plan. They would say that they would
leave. Again the grandfather said, "Yah, right," but when
they started to pack, he realized they were serious. He said,
"O.K. I'll stop the spooky stories."
The Trip to the North Pole
by Mary Brooker
It was the night before Christmas when I was snuggled
in my bed and I heard a KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK at my door. I decided to
get out of bed and get my slippers on and scurry down the stairs as
quietly as I could. I was surprised to see Santa was at the door with
his elves. Santa asked if I would help him, and I said,
"Yes."
So I hopped into the sleigh and saw Rudolf. I said,
"I did not know that Rudolf was real."
Santa said, "Rudolf is really real." It took a long time to
get to the North Pole. By the time we got there, it was really late
and cold. When we got into the workshop, it was nice and warm. They
were busy trying to make more Christmas toys before Christmas
morning.
Santa said, "I don't' know if we can get it all
done in time. They worked for 2 whole hours. They were really tired so
Mrs. Claus gave them some hot chocolate. It was really warm. We got to
go back to work and we finished making all the toys. We hopped in the
sleigh, but I did not thing that we would get all the toys delivered
in time, but we did. I asked Santa if I could stay with him for the
rest of the trip, and he said, "Yes!!"
Thump, Thump, Thump
by Morgan Kimberly Gillis
It was the night before Christmas and Morgan was going
down the creaky stairs to watch a movie. While she was going down the
creaky stairs, she heard a loud thump, thump, thump. She opened the
door and saw it was only Ashton stomping her feet. She had come over
to watch the movie. After the movie was over, Ashton went home and
Morgan went to bed. A few minutes later she heard a thump, thump,
thump again. Morgan thought it was probably just Ashton, so she went
back to bed.
A few minutes later, again, Morgan heard a loud thump,
thump, thump. This time she went down and opened the door, went
outside and looked up on the roof. She saw that it was her mom.
"What are you doing up?" her mother asked,
with her head sticking out of the chimney.
"I am up because I heard a thump, thump,
thump," Morgan replied. "What are you doing up there?"
"I am fixing the chimney for Santa," her mom
informed her.
"Oh, all right," Morgan replied and she
scurried off to bed to make sure she was sleeping when Santa came.
Soon Morgan was fast asleep and she had a dream that
her mom actually met Santa. The next thing she knew it was morning and
Morgan ran down the creaky stairs to open her presents. It had been
another exciting and eventful Christmas at the Gillis house.
The Night Before Christmas
by Matthew Abaya
One cold winter night in a nice warm house, a boy
named John was warm and snuggly in his bed. That night he dreamed that
Santa was calling him from the chimney. He suddenly woke up and heard
something go thump, thump, thump, THUMP, THUMP on the roof. It was
getting louder by the second. He flew down the stairs and saw Rudolf
and the other reindeer.
John asked, "Where's Santa?"
"We don't know," the reindeer answered. So he asked the
reindeer if he they could help find him and they agreed. So he jumped
in the sleigh and tried to find Santa. But they could not find him.
They went back to the North Pole.
When they got to the North Pole, they told the elder
that Santa was lost and that they had been unable to find him. So they
asked the elves if they could help find him. "Ya, sure,"
they replied.
Suddenly, another elf said that we needed to make
toys. But John asked if it were more important to make toys or to find
Santa.
"Making toys, of course."
"But if you make toys, Santa can't deliver them because he's
missing. We can deliver them."
"OK, how about we go find Santa and you make the toys?"
"OK."
So they went to find Santa. First they went to the last place anyone
had seen Santa. But he wasn't there. Then they flew to the North Pole,
but he wasn't there. Next they flew to Santa's workshop. The elves
were finished making presents, so they loaded the sleigh and took off
to deliver the presents.
When they dropped off one of the presents, it dropped
on Santa's head. He was stuck in a chimney. When they found him, John
remembered that thumping he had heard earlier. It had been Santa. They
helped Santa get out of the chimney. He thanked John for helping him
out of the chimney and for helping deliver the presents.
Santa went back to the North Pole to thank the elves
for making presents. Everyone had a Merry Christmas, thanks to John.
My Relatives
by Madison Currah
Hi, my name is Madison. Every year my cousins come over to our cabin on Boxing Day. It has become a Currah family tradition. One Boxing Day, however, was unlike any other that we had had before.
It all started when my dad bought me a new snowmobile for Christmas. I was eager to put on my helmet and test it out in the crisp white powder in the fields behind us. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any gas
left in the shed so I would just have to wait.
I woke up the next morning to the sounds of my cousins running around my cottage. My mom and dad were already up and waiting for them to come. I didn’t know that they were coming but it seems to be that everybody
k new! I was very excited because we haven’t seen them for a long time. It ended up to be a great
Boxing Day!
Ouch
by Matthew Nagy
My mom and my friend’s mom were driving my friend
and I to the park. It seemed hours before we got there because we were so little; we were about three.
When we got there, my friend and I jumped out of the car and ran on to the park. We played with the sand and we played on the equipment.
Then it was snack time. We had cheese and crackers with juice. After that we went on the park again. I saw bars that you can climb up on so I climbed
them. When I got up there it looked like I was a mile high so I looked for a slide but there wasn’t one. I didn’t go back down the bars because it looked too far down.
After two minutes I decided to call my mom; I tried yelling at the top of my lungs but she didn’t hear me.
Then I saw an opening to jump off of. Then I decided to jump off! And I jumped off! It turned out that I landed cross-legged on sand but right under it there was concrete! I cried and cried and my mom came running towards me, picked me up and we said goodbye to my friend and she drove me to the hospital. It turned out that I had a broken leg!
A month later I was out of the cast and limping a little but I was good as new!
We Almost Sank
The Boat
by Matt J. Tumbach
"This is going to be a great day at the beach," Matt snickered as they were driving down the road to lake
Windermere with the boat
hooked behind them.
"As soon as I get there I am going to build a huge sandcastle that is taller than, well………..than all my knowledge put together," bragged
Kaitlin.
"That is about one millimetre high" lolled Matt.
"Stop it," yelled Kaitlin in her baby talk language which was almost impossible to understand.
Suddenly the SUV stopped at the boat launch. Matt, Kaitlin and Debra got out of the SUV while Dale backed the boat into the water.
When it was, we were off!
Matt asked if he could drive and Dale sighed,
"OK." Even though Matt was an under age driver he was still very responsible and knew how to work the boat. Then when Dale was looking lazily back he saw a ton of water coming in the boat and it was coming in quick. Suddenly Dale threw Matt out of the
driver's seat, jumped in, then he put the pedal to the metal. Then all the people on the beach started screaming when they saw a boat flooring toward them. Suddenly the boat hit the shore with a sigh of relief everything turned out just fine.
The end.

Morica
by Meagan Lyszczyk
I have a
new cousin named Morica. Her smile is sweet, but so is her face.
She is wild and wacky and loves to giggle and laugh, just like a
giraffe.
I love to
tickle her toes and her tummy. Her laugh sounds like a treasure, just
like no other. I think she's a cute as the teddy bears on beds. How
could I refuse such a smiling sweet face!
The
Baby That Bites!
by Mike Abbott
"Yessssss!
Josh is coming over tonight!" I cried.
"And
so is Aunt Sara and her three children," Mom said happily.
"Three?
Don't you mean two? Or did she have another baby?" I asked,
hoping that Mom made a mistake.
"No,
Aunt Sara had another baby. Jaws, I think she named it," Mom
said.
"JAWS?
What is that short for?" I yelled.
"Jawslyn,"
Mom said calmly.
Ding Dong!
"They're
here," Mom said. Then I got a chance to see the baby before
Freddy and Teddy saw me... The baby had fangs!
"What
is this?" I said, pointing at the baby.
"That's
Jawslyn," said Teddy, "and she's gonna bite you."
Ding Dong!
"Yay,
Josh is here," I said.
"Hi,"
said Josh's mom. "Who is this?"
"That's
Jawslyn," Mom said.
"Come
Josh," I said, "we have work to do." So we went
upstairs to my bunk bed and made a plan to get rid of Freddy, Teddy
and Jaws.
"OK.
What we need to do is sleep in the tree house so no one will notice
us. Then we will make loud sounds so Freddy and Teddy will wake up and
start screaming. They will wake up Jaws. She will scream and the next
morning they will leave," I
said, hoping that Josh would agree on the plan.
"There's
just one problem Mike," said Josh, "I'm afraid of
heights."
"NOOOO!"
I cried.
Just then
Jaws crawled into the room. "Jowwbbb," she wailed and then
she bit Josh.
"Get
out you hooligan," I said. Freddy walked into the room.
"Duh,
what you doin' to Jaws?" Freddy asked stupidly.
Just then,
of all times, Jaws bit me, "Aaaah!" I cried.
Aunt Sarah
walked in and said, "Come here, Freddy and Jaws. We're
leaving."
"Bu-but!"
"No
buts about it, we're leaving."
An hour
later, Josh and I were as happy as can be because Jaws, Freddy and
Teddy have left, and I am eating candy.

One
Tree house Day
by
Mark Abbot
My
name is Mark and this is the story of how my friend and I built a tree house.
Nic and I are best friends. We always got into trouble but we always
got out of it too. We wanted to build a tree house, so we called it a tree house
day. That’s how it all began. My dad had a whole bunch of wood in
his garage that he said we could use.
We used it for everything on the tree house. When we finished
we sat down and had some cookies and juice. The next morning we
invited some friends to come and sleep in our tree house. We invited
Dillon, Dylan, Christian, Matthew, Keaton and Simon. We played tons of
games, and Gameboy and Playstation. It was a blast. But then we heard
a squeak and we ran out of the tree house in our pajamas. It was
raining so we went inside and told my mom. She said a family of
squirrels had moved in. I thought she was joking around. So we all
went back. We saw a nest in the corner of the tree house. It was a
squirrel’s nest.
I
said, “My mom wasn’t joking.”
We ran
out again in our pajamas. It was still raining so we went inside
I said
to my mom. “Mom! MOM!
There really is a squirrel’s nest!”
“Really?”
said mom, “Let’s see.”
We
went out to see.
“Oh
dear.” she said. “You’re right, there really is a nest. You boys
are going to have to sleep inside.”
“But...
But” I said.
“NO
buts about it.” she replied.
I had
an idea. We would scare
the squirrels out. We got on the ladder. We ran up it and shouted
“AAAHHH!”
The
squirrels ran out. We picked up their nest and threw it right behind
them. And that’s where their new home was.
A
Collection of Family Stories
By
Melissa Chung
I
was supposed to be writing stories. Family stories. I couldn’t think
of any, unless you count the time Great-Aunt Cecilia lost her purse
and when she finally found it, reached in for some money and found a
snake. Or if you count the time my third cousin Bruce lost his pet
tarantula and when his mother found it in the flour.
So you
can imagine how delighted I was when my mom announced that we were
going to our annual family reunion. What better place to search for
family stories than a family reunion? I couldn’t wait.
Along
with my twin brother Michael, who was also searching for family
stories, I managed to uncover a number of stories. What follows is a
record of the stories we found.
The
Missing Baby
By Aunt
Clara
As
Told to Leah and Michael
One
night I had to go out so I had Nicole, my daughter look after my
little baby John. I left at 7:00 p.m. and got back at 9:00 p.m. Nicole
said she couldn’t find John. “Oh no!” I cried, and we searched
the house together. We couldn’t find him. Then Rosie, my cat,
started meowing like crazy. When I tried to pick her up, she scampered
away, but only a short distance. When I followed her, she moved away
again and meowed at me. I followed her. Eventually, she led us to
John, who was asleep in the laundry hamper.
The
Runaway Boy
By
Grandma
As Told
to Leah and Michael
Two of
my boys, Thomas and Paul, were constantly arguing and fighting. One
night they had a fight and Thomas, the younger boy, ended up with two
black eyes. That night he disappeared without a trace. Paul was very
worried and he insisted Thomas had not run away. He found him in his
closet. They never fought again after that.
Ouch!
By Aunt
Carol and Uncle Mark
As
Told to Leah and Michael
One
night our nine-month-old daughter Kaila couldn’t speak or make noise
at all. She tried and tried, but nothing came out. Everyone was
worried about her, except for Mickey, our four-year-old son. When he
complained that he was hungry, and no one answered, he decided he had
had enough and he slapped Kaila on the head. Kaila started to wail and
cry. That was how she became able to speak again.
A Day in the Life of Carrie Hoffman
By: Melissa Chung
My
name is Carrie Hoffman. I’m almost one year old. Everyone thinks
that human beings this age are stupid. I can prove them wrong. I’m
not even one year old, and I know more than the average five year old.
Anyway, I’ll get back to writing my mental journal.
Today
is May 9th. My birthday. Matt, my five-year-old brother
came downstairs to my crib. I stood up in my crib and looked at him. I
said, “Good morning!” except most people would say it sounds like,
“Droob!”
Matt
understands me, though, so he said, “Droob!” back. Matt talked to
me for a little while, until Nora my eleven-year-old sister came
downstairs. Nora picked me up, except she forgot to give me my
blanket!
“Tee
tee kor ya!” I shrieked, waving my arms toward my crib. Matt reached
in and picked up my blanket, which he handed to me. Nora took me into
the bathroom and changed my diaper.
Mom
came downstairs and started making pancakes. Yum. Pancakes are very
good, especially with syrup, but the syrup is very sticky. I somehow
got syrup all over my cheeks, hands and even some on my nose. Ooh! It
was sticky. Maybe next time we have pancakes I won’t have so much
syrup. Oh, well. It was better than the usual porridge. Yuck!
After
breakfast I got my presents: a fluffy white stuffed kitten, a cuddly
teddy bear, a fuzzy stuffed rabbit and a fabric doll. All of these
things we put into my crib. I played with them until lunch. Lunch was
mushy macaroni and cheese with ground beef.
After
lunch I was feeling sleepy so I took a nap. I had a bottle of milk and
decided to make some noise because it was too quiet. When no one was
looking, I banged the sides of my crib and yelled, “Doo doo tee
tee!” But maybe it wasn’t such a good idea. Mom came running, and
she wasn’t too pleased. Then we had spaghetti with meatballs for
dinner, but I had to have my spaghetti cut up and I got sauce all over
my face. Mom had to feed me and she got all messy too.
After
dinner Nora read to me from a book called The Littlest Elephant. I
think I might have fallen asleep during the story, because the next
thing I knew, Matt was shaking me and whispering, “Come on! Carrie,
it’s time for cake! Come on, Carrie!”
As I
sat in my highchair, I watched Mom getting out a cake and Dad lighting
a candle on the cake. Then Mom, Dad, Nora and Matt started singing,
“Happy Birthday to You.” Then everyone said, “Blow out the
candles! I mean the candle!” So I blew as hard as I could towards
the cake. Spit flew everywhere. Dad cut the cake into pieces and
everyone got a piece. I got icing all over my hands, face and even in
my hair. The dress I was wearing was itchy, but the cake was
delicious. After Mom and Dad cleaned me up and put my sleeper on me I
was put into my crib and I soon fell asleep.
So
ends day 365 in the life of Carrie Hoffman.
A
Play for Grama and Grampa
by
Meghan Wladyka
One
day, on June 15th, Grama and Grampa came over to tell us
some important news. The important news was that they were moving in
three weeks to Ireland, the land of their birth. When they left, my
older sister had a great idea. She wanted to do a play to show Grama
and Grampa how much we loved them. The rest of the family agreed.
The
very next day, my mother made lots of phone calls to book a church
hall for the play. We found a very nice church. It was very small and
cozy, but as it turned out it was perfect. Now, we had to think about
how we would do the play. My older brother came up with a great idea.
He thought we should do a story about how Grama and Grampa lived in
Ireland, how they came to the Canada, and their life here. We were all
very excited about the idea and Mom started to tell us some of the
stories she had heard.
The
next morning we decided to have three scenes in the story. We wrote
down the scenes and decided which characters would be in each scene.
Following this, we decided who would play each character. I got to be
my grandma while she was a young girl in Ireland. I also got to be my
mom when she was a young girl.
One
of the things I enjoyed the most was finding costumes. After sorting
through clothes at twelve different stores we finally came upon a
place that had all the right costumes. We spent four hours there!
We
wrote out invitations to all of our family and close friends. We put
old pictures on the invitations of my Grama and Grampa, and inside we
wrote the time, place and date.
We
had two weeks to prepare for the play and it was a lot of work. We had
rehearsals every day after dinner. It was a lot of fun being with my
family and learning about my heritage. I found out how my Grama and
Grampa lived their lives as pioneers in Canada and all the struggles
they had.
Finally,
the night of the play arrived. We all had butterflies in our stomachs,
but when we looked out into the audience, and saw Grama and Grampa,
and all the friendly faces of our family and friends, we relaxed.
I
was the first one to enter the stage. I even had practiced my Irish
accent and when I said my first line everyone cheered. The play went
very well and when we were finished, everyone stood up and clapped. I
looked over and saw both Grama and Grampa with tears of pride and joy
in their eyes.
The
next day Grama and Grampa were leaving for Ireland. We picked them up
and we drove them to the airport. Before they boarded the plane, I
gave them both a big hug and a kiss. Then, my mom and dad gave us all
a big surprise. Dad had bought tickets for our family to go to Ireland
and stay with Grama and Grampa during summer vacation. We would leave
in one week. I was so excited I started jumping up and down. Grama and
Grampa were so excited they almost missed their plane. As Grama and
Grampa’s plane flew away I did not feel so bad, because I knew I
would be joining them soon.
