A Grandmother’s Wish
by Sydney Shewcuk

Once upon a time there lived a kind old lady who was a grandma. She lived in a tiny log cottage in the middle of a tall green forest. Grandma was very lonely and sad. She wished that children would visit her in her tiny log cottage.

One day, grandma decided to go for a long walk. While she was walking, she met a family with two happy children and a cute little dog. She introduced herself and said they could visit anytime. Grandma kept walking and meeting families all day. She became very, very tired and went home to sleep in her cozy bed.

In the morning she heard a knock at the door. When she opened the door there was all of the families she had met on her walk the day before. Grandma was so excited that she invited everyone into her tiny cottage. She baked cookies and made pancakes for everyone. All of the families had such a good time they promised to come back tomorrow.

The Sledding Accident
 by Sean Cunningham

Once upon a time, there lived a little boy named Jake. He was ten years old, and he loved sledding.

One winter day, Jake was in the backyard having a snowball fight with his brother Lucas. The snow was really sticky because it was five degrees above zero. Both of them were so hot that they took off their blue and yellow parkas. Lucas asked Jake if he wanted to go on the sledding hill across the street. Jake was really excited because he loved sledding. They asked their mom if they could go, and she answered, "Yes, boys, as long as you are really careful!"

When they got to the hill, Jake and Lucas saw a big jump on the opposite side of the hill. It was about three feet tall and two feet wide. They trudged through the deep soft snow to get to the top. Lucas got on the sled, and Jake asked if he could go off the jump with Lucas. Lucas shook his head as he started to push the sled. Jake hopped on at the last minute and screamed all the way down. At the jump, they went up with a whoop and down with a crack. Jake had hit his nose on the back of Lucas' head. Lucas heard Jake crying and called for a parent. The parent who came to help them was a doctor. He looked at Jake's nose and told Lucas that it was broken. Lucas was supposed to take Jake home and put some ice on the injury.

From that day on, Jake never went down double when there was a jump. He had also learned not to be so rough on sleds.

My Grandpa
by Sydney Shewchuk

My Grandpa was a very kind and generous man. He always had a smile on his face. When he was 65 he found out that he had lung cancer. The doctors had done surgery to get the cancer out. The doctors thought they had killed the cancer. My Grandpa got stronger and stronger. He was almost his old self.

A year later my Grandpa had some tests and the doctors found out that he had cancer again. Our family was so shocked. My Grandpa stayed in the hospital for a very long time and then came home as we knew he would die.

I miss him very much, but I know he is up in heaven where he belongs. He is my hero and he will be my hero forever.

Birthday
by Sean Cunningham

Once upon a time there lived an old couple. They were grandparents of a boy named Matthew. The grandparents' names were John and Laurie.

On December 28, Matthew's parents, Ron and Betty, were planning a surprise birthday party for John. He was turning 81 and his birth date was December 31, 1920. Ron called all the family on John's side to ask if they could come to the party.

"I think the party should be at the Brookview Hall," requested Betty. Later that evening, Ron and Betty had all the plans figured out. The cake would say, 'Happy Birthday, John.' Everybody would bring something including food, gifts, and decorations. Last but not least, the party would be December 30, 2001 at 1:00 p.m.

The day of the party, Ron, Betty and Matthew were up at 10:00 a.m. to go to the hall and setup. It took them 2 1/2 hours to make the hall look nice and beautiful.

When the people started arriving, Matthew took their coats and hung them in a closet. Ron seated the people down and Betty served them some food. About 20 minutes later, Ron got in his rented limousine and went to get his parents, John and Laurie. When Ron arrived at their door, he knocked on the wooden door. Laurie answered the door. Ron said, "Laurie, tell John to get some fancy clothes on and come to the door. You should do the same."

A couple of minutes later John and Laurie came to the door in really fancy clothes. John was wearing a tuxedo and a tie. Laurie was wearing a purple dress with her hair tied up in a bun. Then Ron smiled.

"Come into the limousine I rented."

"Why a limousine?" asked John. "You'll see when you get there," answered Ron.

Half an hour later, Ron, John, and Laurie arrived in the limo. Betty and Matthew came rushing out to greet them. When they entered the building Matthew took their coats and Betty seated them at the head table.

After supper, Ron called John to cut the cake. The cake read, 'Happy Birthday, John.' As everybody was singing Happy Birthday, John walked up to the counter with the cake on it. While he was walking, he slipped on a spilled drink and fell face first into the cake. He looked like he was really mad. Everyone held their breath. Two seconds later, he burst into laughter. Then the whole hall was full of laughing people. Everybody rushed up and helped him up and cleaned him off.

After he was cleaned up, he had a great birthday party!

Grace
by Sam McCarthy

I have a new baby cousin named Grace,
And she has the cutest little round face.
My Uncle John helps her fly through the skies,
My Auntie Tam just loves to give her rides.
Her diapers are stinky, a little too much,
Her sweet little skin is so soft to the touch.
Her hair smells like baby powder,
And I love her like I love a wildflower.
Grace is such a treasure, I want no other,
I love her just like a really great mother!

A Strange Discovery
by Sarah Chomyc

Drip, drip, drop.  “Moooom, I’m bored.  What should I do?” whined Lorenzo.

“Well, why don’t you play a board game?” suggested her impatient mother.

“No.  That’s boring,” complained Lorenzo.

“Okay, why don’t you watch a movie?” Maria asked.

“No.  That’s also boring,” muttered Lorenzo.

“Well, then I’m telling you to go upstairs with your sister and clean the attic,” ordered Maria.

“Fine.  Fiorella!  Come down here for a sec,” Lorenzo shouted up the stairs.

“Coming,” Fiorella called back.  Fiorella walked gracefully down the stairs and stopped in front of her mother.  “Mother, is something wrong?” she asked.

“No,” Maria answered kindly.  “But your brother here has been telling me he is quite bored.  I have simply asked him to clean the attic and thought that this would be a great rainy day activity for two bored siblings.”

“Oh,” Fiorella said quietly.  “Well, shall we?”

“Okay,” grumbled Lorenzo.

When they got to the attic they sat down quietly and started sorting through items.  Suddenly, breaking the silence, Fiorella yelled, “Hey Lorenzo!  Come over here.”

Walking over, Lorenzo asked, “What do you want?”

“I found a trunk and I need help opening it,” Fiorella replied as if it were the most obvious explanation in the world.

“Olay,” answered Lorenzo.

Together they pushed on the lock and it sprang open, making them jump back.  They walked over to the trunk and looked inside.  There were a bunch of ball gowns and tuxedos wrapped in plastic.  “Wow!” the children exclaimed.

Leaning over the trunk, Fiorella picked up a yellow ball gown and a tuxedo wrapped together.

“Let’s put these on,” she suggested.

Lorenzo was about to say no, when he saw the look on his twin’s face and he decided to humour her.  “Okay,” he said.

“Great!” exclaimed Fiorella.  She carefully unwrapped the plastic and handed Lorenzo the tuxedo.  Then she unfolded the gown and carefully clipped it on.  “Can you zip this up please?”

“Just one second,” replied Lorenzo, tying a tie. “There.”

He walked over to his sister and zipped up her dress.

Suddenly, a clear bubble picked them up and dropped them in a ballroom.  Many adults were dancing around them. The two kids looked down and then ran through the crowd, to the washroom.  Then they looked into the mirror and gasped.  They turned to each other and said, “We look like our parents when they were younger!”

“Whoa, this is really weird,” said an astonished Fiorella.  “I think I will just take off this dress.”

“Ya,” agreed Lorenzo.

The two children took off the dress and tuxedo and they suddenly appeared before their mom in the attic.

They held out the clothes and said “here” very timidly.

“Well, I suppose it is kind of my fault.  We are related very distantly to the royal family in Italy,” Maria said.

“Wow!” the twins exclaimed.  “We’re Royal!”

A Special Day

by Shannon Fox

Birthdays are exciting times. They are my favorite kind of celebration. Well, they used to be anyway. You see something happened that changed my birthday forever and it went exactly like this.

It was a cool August morning. It was the last week of summer. So next Monday we would start school again. Most of the summer, I had spent with my dad because my mom was very pregnant and very tired. I remember the day in the winter when I over heard my mom and dad at the kitchen table as I went up our winding staircase. My dad said, “Oh this is wonderful!” and a large smile was pasted across his face. He called us into the kitchen, and then my parents told my brother, Damian and I that mom was expecting a baby in the fall. At the time, I thought that having a little baby brother would be great. Now, I would be able to tell someone else what to do.

I wanted to spend more time with my mom this last week before school. I missed playing with her. My favorite activity was playing with my Spiderman action figures. Spiderman would shoot his web at walls so he could find his way down the staircase. My mom would play Hobgoblin and throw fabric pumpkins at Spiderman. We always fell on the floor laughing. I had asked for a Spiderman car for my birthday present next week. I could hardly wait to drive Spiderman to Hobgoblin’s lair. My Mom and I would have so much fun!

Mom always made our birthdays very special. She would let us open our presents first thing in the morning, even before breakfast or getting dressed. We didn’t have to do any household chores on our birthday. She would make pancakes for breakfast and the cake that we wanted. We would be allowed to lick the extra frosting from the spoon and the decorator. This year, she was even going to put Hobgoblin on the top of the cake with seven candles for my age.

On the morning of my birthday, I ran down the staircase expecting to see my mom making my favorite breakfast, pancakes, but instead it was my Aunt Patty making French toast, something that I really hate. Of course I thought THAT was the only thing that was going to turn out wrong. “Where is MOM?” I yelled in dismay.

“Your mother is at the hospital,” Aunt Patty answered. “Don’t yell in the house.”

“Why is she in the hospital? Did she break her leg?” I asked.

“She is at the hospital to have the baby,” Aunt Patty answered.

What was going on? This birthday wasn’t going to be a special day at all if my mom wasn’t there to make it special. The day went all wrong. I really hoped that things would get better.

Later on, I asked if I could open my presents early but Aunt Patty said that I had to wait until after the birthday cake was served following supper. When Aunt Patty was decorating the vanilla cake, she wouldn’t let me help. (I hate vanilla. I wanted chocolate but she said that chocolate was bad for your complexion.) She didn’t want any frosting on the counters.

Near the end of the day I asked if Aunt Patty had done the household chores. “Sweet heart I thought that you were supposed to do them. Not me.”

I had had enough. “I want MOMMY,” I yelled. “I want to visit her in the hospital!”

“Calm down,” Aunt Patty tried to soothe me. “Your parents phoned and you have a little sister. Now you will have some one to share your birthday with.”

Share my birthday? Was Aunt Patty out of her mind? I didn’t want to share my special day. Share attention, birthday cake, and decisions on MY very own birthday. I don’t think that she understood what made birthdays special. My birthday would never be special for just me ever again.

It did not take me much to convince Aunt Patty to take Damian and me over to the hospital. All we did was get into the car and drive off. When we got to the hospital, we ran to the area were people have babies. In room 275 we found my mom. In her arms was a small pink bundle. I walked up to mom and peeked into the tiny blanket. There was a small head in there with open eyes and tiny cupid lips. “Want to hold her Taylor?” my mom asked.

I nodded with a feeling of surprise. She handed me the tiny bundle. It was much lighter than I expected. The baby was very fragile. “Want to know her name?” she asked .

“Yes Mommy, I do,” I replied.

“Alright then,” said Mom. “Her name is Marie Jaime Hanson.” Oh, I thought that is such a pretty name. Really, instead of a baby girl I was expecting a boy but a girl is just fine. “So what do you think?” asked mom.

“Excellent!” I answered.

My feelings of resentment seemed to melt away as I looked into Marie’s blue eyes. Marie and I would share something else that no one else did. We would share the same birthday, so we would be special every day of the year. Now even though I had to share my birthday, I think that I am pretty lucky because I get to be a big brother. I am going to make sure that I do a good job as “big” brother.

Sisters
by Shauntel Lengle

Sisters are fun and really kind,
They do some things that will blow your mind.

Sometimes they’re rotten and sometimes they’re mean,
But when they’re nice they’re the best they can be!

They follow you wherever you go,
You will never know why, you will never know.

They love you, they care,
When ever your down they will always be there,
When ever you’re lonely or when you are scared.

It doesn’t matter if they’re big pests,
I will always remember the things they do best!

Sisters!

Soccer Pal

 By Sydney Shewchuk

Today is soccer night.  When we got to my soccer game I started to practice my pass and kick (it’s quite hard). My coach said that we were short a player and asked if my brother Cooper would like to play.  Cooper said yes, so he joined our game and was very proud to play with his big sister.  We had a super game, I scored three goals with my brother by my side.  After the game my Mommy took us for a milkshake and all Cooper could talk about was playing soccer.

Baby Shannon

By Sydney Shewchuk

“Wha, Wha, Wha,” went baby Shannon.  She is only 5 months old, being born on September 21st.  Shannon has one older brother named Steven.  Shannon likes to eat, sleep and play.

One afternoon Shannon went to her Grandmother’s house.  Her mother, father and Steven went to a movie.  When they left Shannon, she cried and cried and cried.

Her Grandmother Emily said, “It’s okay, they’ll be back soon”.

Shannon forgot about her family leaving.  She played with her doll and teddy bear.  Two hours later her family came to pick her up, she was so happy and had a huge smile on her face.
